FBI keep Bechtel's family up to date on status of search for her

RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP) - The Federal Bureau of Investigation has given the family of Amy Wroe Bechtel updates each week on the status of its search for her, said the woman's mother.

Joanne Wroe said her daughter's disappearance is especially troubling during the holiday season.

"It was a difficult weekend. We had most of our family here. It was good to be together," Wroe said Monday.

Bechtel, 25, of Lander, vanished while scouting out a route for a foot race in the Loop Road area of the Shoshone National Forest near Lander on July 24.

Earlier this month, a federal grand jury convened in Casper after three witnesses were subpoenaed.

Questioning in the Nov. 19 hearing centered around a man who used to observe Bechtel when she worked at a Laramie coffee shop.

The FBI believes the man might be in Canada but has been unable to find him, said Jay Newton, Bechtel's brother-in-law in Laramie.

"The big question mark is that he could not be located," said Joanne Wroe. "They just wanted information from him."

Wroe said the man had a crush on her. The FBI has contacted Canadian authorities about the man, who supposedly has an alibi for the time Bechtel disappeared.

"They're (FBI) pushing really hard on this one," Wroe said. "It's one of the indications that they are."

Due to secrecy surrounding grand jury proceedings, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Cheyenne would not comment on the issue.
